Missouri has cool, cold winters and hot summers. In the southern part of the state the climate is humid subtropical, influenced by the air from the Gulf of Mexico. Because Missouri has no large mountains or oceans to moderate its temperature the climate is strongly influenced by air from both the cold Arctic and the warm Gulf of Mexico, hence the southeast tends to be warmer than the northwest. Kansas City has an average temperature range of between 26°F (-3°C) in January to 79°F (26°C) in July.
