Montana's climate, divided into eastern and western regions, is generally hot in summer and cold in winter, with milder temperatures experienced in the west. Winters bring snow and can be very cold, particularly in the east, but frequent 'chinook' winds from the eastern Rocky Mountains bring mild spells that give relief from the biting cold, which can last for several days at a time. Maximum daytime temperatures for the state average 27°F (-2°C) in January and 85°F (29°C) in July, and summer nights are usually cool. The west tends to experience milder temperatures in general.
