Climate

The Cascade Mountains divide the state into east and west, with damper and milder conditions in the west. The Pacific Ocean moderates the temperatures on the west of the mountains, while summer and winter temperatures reach higher extremes to the east. Heavy fog and rainfall are common in Portland. Snowfall is heaviest in the mountains during winter, with the coldest temperatures falling in January.
