Scotland's climate is temperate, though like the rest of the United Kingdom, the weather tends to be unpredictable and can change from day to day. In general, Scotland tends to be cool, damp and cloudy, and is colder on average than the rest of the UK, but the Gulf Stream tends to create warmer temperatures than other places on the same or similar latitudes. January and February are the coldest months, averaging temperatures of 41°F to 45°F (5°C to 7°C), and summer has average temperatures of 66°F (19°C) during its warmest months of July and August. The coldest areas are the highlands and the northern latitude means short winter days and very long summer evenings. The east coast experiences more sunshine, but colder winters, compared to the west. Snowfall occurs in the lowlands, but is heavier at higher elevations, and rainfall differs widely across the country.
