With South Dakota's temperate climate, visitors will have the best luck if they plan trips during the summer, when the weather is hot and dry. July and August are especially enjoyable months, although hot spells are common with temperatures climbing to 100°F (38°C) for days at a time. Winters, on the other hand, can be severe, with very cold temperatures and high winds, particularly in January and February. March and April normally bring slightly warmer conditions, but these are the months when heavy snowstorms tend to hit.
