I'll be in Australia in late October with 4 friends and we're plannig a road trip from Sydney to Perth before flying home. We plan on stopping for a while in Melbourne and that's about as far as we've got. We're going to take our time with this trip but would prefer to reach perth before the summer heat kicks in.

As far as renting a car goes, do you think we'll need a 4x4 or will we be ok with a regular spacious car/minivan?
- Anyone got some good suggestions of other places worth stopping at along the way.
- Any good backpackers or campsites on the way to Melbourne?
- Great attractions/beaches/party places we should know about en route?
- Also, what's the best route to take in terms of scenery?
