Looking at doing the Inca trail in February or March - can anyone recommend a good company or guide? I want someone who can give me qulaity info on the fauna and flora on the Machu Pichu hike, as well as the ruins once we get there. also, i've heard its vital to acclimatise for the altitude and heat before setting off. Is this true? I am coming from a sealevel country (UK) - will i be short of oxygen up there? How long should i plan to spend in Cuzco (?) to get my body ready for the hike. Thanks Brian

Hi,

The Inca Trail is closed for the whole month of February every year. If you plan on going in March you really need to book your permit AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I would book all of it in the UK with a Travel Company such as Kumuka in London (tel: 020-7937-8855; www.kumuka.com). Look at these links:

I recommend a minimum of 2 nights in Cusco before you start the Inca Trail. Not only is it to acclimatise, but Cusco is a great city, and you might want to do the 1 Day Sacred Valley Tour which takes you to Pisac Ruins and Ollantaytambo Ruins. On arrival in Cusco you will be a little short of breathe, it is not that bad. The majority of hotels have oxygen tanks just in case. Take it easy on your first day. Go for short walks, rest, lie down, drink LOTS of water, I mean LOTS!! Drink the local Coca Tea. Take some high altitude tablets with you, just in case.

Cheers
