I'm heading to New Mexico for the weekend. I'm an American citizen, do I need a passport to get into New Mexico?

Please tell me this is a joke. New Mexico is part of the U.S......So is Kansas....this still may not clear it up for you. So, NO you do not need a passport. There is an IQ test at the border though.
