New years eve in Rio

I'm planning a trip with three friends to Rio de Janeiro for Christmas and New Years. I know the Reveillon festivals are supposed to be almost as crazy as Mardi Gras, but there isn't as much info on them. Can anyone give me tips on new years in Rio? Is there good (cheap!) accommodation near the festivities? Is it safe? What's the best way to save money on a trip like this?
