We used the ferry in early Nov 2009. The cost for foot passengers is next-to-nothing -- not having Zambian kwachas I bought tickets with two US $ and the fellow gave me change. It then turned out that they don't even check tickets for foot passengers, just vehicles. Not sure what the wait is for cars, though -- one of the three ferries had broken down, and there was a long line of trucks waiting to cross. However, I was told the long lineup isn't typical.
