Does a South African need a visa for Spain?

Hi,
I am flying from the US (have green card) and am traveling back to South Africa on S. African passport. I have a 10 hour layover in Spain before my flight to JHB. Do I need a visa to leave the airport, or to even arrive in the airport do I need any kind of visa? Please advise. Thanks in advance :)
