Kenya travel by train

I would like to travel Kenya by train and would like to know if the train from Nairobi goes to both Kisumu and Mombassa? What is the best train route to see most of the Kenyan sights? Would I be better off hiring a car/4x4 and doing a self-drive tour? Any suggestions?
