Trains from Civitavecchio to Rome
  • Arriving on cruise ship and wish to get to Rome solo on train.

    Questions:-
1)how close port to train station in Civitavecchio?
    2)is there just once station?
    3)how much?
4)wish to visit central Rome - not Vatican area - so which station to get off at?
    5) how long journey and are there regular trains (Summer 2010)

Went on similiar cruise last year and numerous people went by train. We were going to BUT some staff on cruise said it was not worth it as complicated. However the people who did go solo managed OK.

So how easy is it? Any answers to questions above plus other useful info on this matter would be much appreciated

    thanks
  • Good morning Christinele
    answering your questions :
    1) the train station of Civitavecchia is few hundreds of metres far from the port , it's possible if it's a sunny and lovely day to go there by walk (about 15 mins) but you'll find for sure some shuttles directly from the port to the train station, even your cruise company should have its own shuttle to bring you there
    2) yes there is one train station
    3) the train ticket from civitavecchia cost depends on the type of train you take , there is a direct line which takes about 45-50 mins that costs about 11-12 Euros instead there is a longer trip type of train that takes about 1.10 -1.20 to reach rome and costs 4-5 euros (all the prices are one way per person)
    4) Roma Termini
5)there are plenty of trains even during summer (maybe on August there is a variation on timetables ) one every 30 mins and 1 hour depending on the type of route
It's wotrhy of course but obviously it's quite a long trip considering the shuttle the train to Rome but nothing complicated or difficult believe me.
    Enjoy your holiday!

  • Wow, you guys are good. Question answered!
  • For all train bookings in Italy use the new website which also has english. BTW once into central Rome (arrive at Termini and then take a taxi), taxi fares are reasonable and taxis are also far quicker than Metro or other means (as the metro needs indirect connections and does not reach everywhere). The popular quick must do visits are the Coliseum (40min queue typical), Vatican (20 min queue typical) and Trevi Fountains (Spanish stairs are within a few mins walk) and each of these legs by taxi will cost you less than €10 and you get to see more of Rome while in the taxi. Sitting on the ship when so close to Rome would be criminal.
