Entry into Taiwan on Canadian passport with less than 6 months

Recently, I was told by an official in Taiwan and by the representative of the airlines that I could enter Taiwan even though my Canadian passport will expire in less than 6 months if I obtained a Taiwan visa.
The company that I use to expedite such matters said no.
Who is right? -
it's best to check with the embassy. i was told it's not possible.
