Living in Bangkok

Hi,
My partner and I are planning to live in Bangkok for at least six months from March 2011. He is going to be studying in the Silom area and I was wondering if anyone could give us any pointers on good neighbourhoods to live in which aren't too difficult transport wise to get to and from.
Any advice would be much appreciated! -
