While Singapore and KL are not known as child-friendly destinations, there is a huge variety of attractions to keep children busy.

Here is a selection of activities in each city:

Fancy terrifying your kids, and yourself? Try a spot of white water rafting. Less than an hour from the city centre, rubber rafts set off from Kuala Kubu Baru and take you through grade 1-4 rapids.

Accessible by commuter train, the MINES features rides for adults and children including the roller coaster and a traditional merry-go-round. More unusual is the Snow House, which displays ice carvings of famous landmarks. The water taxi takes you on a cruise on the lake and right into the MINES shopping centre. There are a number of gardens for a quiet stroll and miniature golf for all ages. Open: 18h00-23h00 (Mon-Fri); 17h00-23h00 (Sat-Sun). Admission: Adults RM32, children below 12 RM21.

National Zoo and Aquarium

Home of the tiger, honey bear, mousedeer, and tapir, Malaysia's National Zoo houses more than 4,000 animals of 413 different species in settings as natural as possible. For a little more quiet, stroll around the aquarium and come nose to nose with over 80 species of marine and freshwater animals, among which are the innocent-looking closed-mouth piranha and the lightning-quick moray eel. Open: 09h00-17h00, daily. Within the city itself, there are other parks with birds, butterflies and deer. Information brochures can be obtained from hotel counters and tourist offices. Jurong Bird Park and Reptile Park

The Bird Park has over 600 species of bird life housed in generously spaced aviaries, and features realistic touches like the tropical rainforest and the world's tallest cascading waterfall. Next door, the Jurong Reptile Park is home to crocodiles, snakes and giant lizards. Daily 09h00-18h00.

Singapore Discovery Centre

Hi-tech exhibits include virtual parachuting, a fighter-jet motion simulator and an interactive showcase of military technology. It's great fun, although the girls could take some convincing. Tue-Sun 09h00-19h00

Sentosa Island
Until 1967 Sentosa - meaning "peace and tranquillity" - was a British military fortress. In the 1970s the government set about developing the island as a leisure resort for the citizens of the increasingly congested city. The result is a landscaped recreational environment where you can enjoy great entertainment facilities. Get there by taking the orange Sentosa bus which plies to and from the harbour bus interchange. Buses run from 07h00-23h00 (Sun-Thur); 07h00-00h30 (Fri & Sat) and cost SGD1. Alternatively, take the cablecar enjoying the spectacular views along the way. Cable cars depart from the habour tower 2 between 08h30-23h00 and cost SGD10.90, adults; SGD5.50, children.

The best of the attractions is the splendid Underwater World - a tropical oceanarium with a submerged transparent tunnel allowing visitors to view over 250 species of marine life in remarkable proximity. Feeding time is 11h00 and 16h30 daily. It's connected to the equally excellent Dolphin Lagoon, with its pink dolphins that perform regularly for the crowds. Open: daily 09h00-21h00. Admission: SGD19.50, adults; SGD12.50, children (includes Dolphin Lagoon).

Other highlights on the island include Fort Siloso, a genuine 19th-century military fort. You can trace its history through displays of ordnance and artefacts. Open: daily 10h00-18h00. Admission: SGD8, adults; SGD5, children.

Elsewhere on Sentosa you can find restaurants, bars, golf courses, cinemas and any of a range of other entertainments to suit all ages. It's not surprising then that the island has become the weekend playground for most people in the city.
