What currency do I take to Egypt?

Hi, I am travelling to Egypt in May. Does anyone know what the best currencey is to take? I am from the UK. Should I get egyption currency before I go or take travellers cheques? I am going to Cairo, for a cruise and staying in Luxor. What is the safest thing to do and is it easy changing travellers cheques. Also are pounds or dollars best. Thank you

I am going April and my friends are just back. The said US $'s are best. Take some $1 notes too as they are best for tips etc.
