Hi Leena congratulations on your resent marriage. Is there anychance you can advise me how your syrian husband managed to get his certificate of impediment. My fiance is syrian and living in saudi arabia. He says his birth certificate confirms his martial status as single. Im ok with my papers as its easy from the uk and we are also using a wedding planner. The wedding planner seems to only be able to advise me and not my fiances. Are you able to give me any advise please. Also my fiance can only get a 2 year passport not a full 10 year. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks Zoe

Hi Leena, hope your well. Were still not married yet. My divorce is taking longer than we planned. My fiance is from Homs in syria. He has just managed to get a new passport but it is only for 2 years. Any help would be much appreciated. Kindest Regards Zoe

Hi Zoe the passport will not be a problem if the length is only 2 years and his birth certificate is sufficient to prove that he is single and can marry. My husband also used his birth certificate, but he must obtain a recent copy from syria as it has to be dated within the last 6 months the same as your certificate of no impediment. Im also sure that my husband had to get his certificate stamped from the common wealth office in Syria but I will check with him when he comes home from work and get back to you about that. Your husband should try contact the Syrian Embassy in Turkey as they may allow the certificate to be dated outside the 6 months due to the war in Syria at the moment but im really not sure about that. Does he have family that are still in Syria who could obtain a recent copy and get it stamped? If so that would be better for him. Once he has this he will need to have in translated into Turkish by a notar in Turkey and have it notarised. I will get all the details from my husband and get back to you. Which part of Turkey do you plan to marry in? We used a wedding planner who knew everything that Syrians had to do but he did not know what people from the UK had to do....this wasnt a problem for us as i already had the information i needed for myself. I will be in touch once i confirm with my husband, hopefully by tomorrow evening. Best wishes

Hi Leena, Thank you for all the info, I really appreciate it. I will as my fiance to contact the syrian embassy in turkey. You could be right because of the war situation they maybe ok with the birth certificate. He has family still there just now so we should be ok. I like a hotel called ece Saray in Fethiye. I've been incontact with a wedding planner called Hayal from eggorgabizasyan.com (not sure if you have heard of them?). Theey are the opposite they are great with what I need but not so much with the syrian paper work. It's really straight forward for us now from the uk since they changed it. Do you mind me asking where in turkey you married and would you recommend the wedding planner you used? Many Thanks for you continued help. Are you and your husband all settled in the uk now? Did you face any problems getting a spouse visa? Many thanks Zoe

Hi Zoe im sorry its taken a while for me to get back to you i have been busy with it bejng the month of Ramadan. I asked my husband about the birth certificate etc and he confirmed that he obtained a copy of the certificate and got it stamped byvthe foreign office in Syria. Once we arrived in Turkey he had it translated by a notar and stamked, it was then stamped hy the Syrian Embassy and then the Turkish Governent (yep i know....i lot of stamps). You will also need a copy of your passports translating into Turkish, stamping by a notar and then stamped by the Turkish goverment, once you have this along with your medical report and letter from the hotel confirming your staying there, you are good to go. If you decide to get married in a registry office you must get married in a registry office that is in the same district as the hotel you are staying in.

As for the wedding planner, he does not plan 'proper' weddings, like arranging hotels, food and party etc, he simply knows the process for syrians so he arranges for all the translations and stamping of documents, along with accompanying you to the medical centre to get the medical report and he also attends the ceremony as he acts as a translator throughout. We only wanted a simple ceremony in a registry office with our witnesses so this was ideal for us but if you are planning a wedding with a function etc then i would not recommend him. In regards to the visa, i did not apply for a spouse visa as i have moved abroad with my husband, i did however apply for a visitors visa when we were engaged but this was refused. Have you check the Government website to check the criteria for a spouse visa? I know that you have to be earning over a certain amount etc. I hope this information is useful for you and i sincerely wish you all the best and hope the wedding arrangements run smoothly for you. If you need anything else just let me know. Leena
