The castle-like structure is the Torre del Homenaje or Tower of Homage, built to glorify the Spanish conquistadors, who came here from Spain to conquer and colonize the newly discovered lands. It was from this Ozama Fort in Old Santo Domingo that the famous expeditions of conquest began.
