Cordoba became the capital of the Moorish kingdom and work began on the Great Mosque to become one of the largest in Islam. When the city was re-conquered by the Christians in 1236 the mosque was deemed to beautiful to destroy and their own cathedral was built in the middle of its rows and arches, creating the extraordinary church-mosque of today.
